The Kakapo is a flightless and native New Zealand parrot that is easily recognisable by its distinctive yellow-green plumage. Janet Martin plays on the flightless nature of the native kakapo in her children’s book Joe the Kakapo.

Joe is a solitary kakapo who lives on his own on an island off the coast of the South Island. One night out exploring Joe slips and falls down a slippery track. He breaks his toe and is all on his own. Will someone come and rescue Joe the Kakapo?
